RELIGION & MY LIFE SERIES-THE WORLD DOESN’T OWE ME ANYTHING

No automatic alt text available.

I write because I don’t believe the world owes me anything. Rather, it becomes a question on how I can contribute to the world’s happiness and success.

  1. My happiness depends on me
  2. My wealth depends on me
  3. Respect depends on me
  4. Trust depends on me
  5. Employment depends on me
  6. My health depends on me
  7. My fitness depends on me

Then I think of JFK’s quote

If health is on my side I can work and seek work until someone gives me a break. I have prayed in the past and people have come my way and given me a job not because I was the most qualified, but I was told later on by my employer that they felt I would be the most trusted. I didn’t prove them wrong.                    Alternatively, I have created my own work. I put a flyer up at my local shopping centre noticeboard for work. Currently I tutor students one on one.

Respect is to be earned, I treat others like I want to be treated. If I show respect then I demand it back . If others don’t respect me then they are wasting my time and theirs.

Trust is also to be earned, I don’t trust anyone until they have earned my trust. Evil is out there, the enemy preys on the weak and tries to steal your joy like a thief in the night.

Image result for bible, the thief comes only to steal like a thief in the night I try to live by “Kingdom principles.” I believe that the kingdom of God can be amongst us, it’s all about what you project and how you can build God’s Kingdom around you.

One way I do this is by living the truth, the truth according to JESUS CHRIST.

I care very much as to what happens to people and my family esp. my children. I care for my elderly mother. I support my children and advise them when they are wrong, without being afraid of the rebuttals.   I donate to the poor. I volunteer at my local church by teaching students who want to learn about God from non -christian schools. I really enjoy it and I try to make it enjoyable for them as well.

I avoid temptation by not getting myself involved with people or places that might lead to temptation. I love simplicity. I enjoy boundaries and I like living within parameters. I believe in prevention rather than the cure. I also believe that people are flawed including myself. I trust in the Trinity :- FATHER, SON & HOLY SPIRIT AND THAT THEY WILL LEAD ME TO THE TRUTH and they have.

One might think that my life is BORING! No it’s not, my life is great and I owe it all to God. Prayer and surrendering to God, communicating with HIM about my life and  asking for help is exactly what God wants. I give praise to Him and try to live my life accordingly. I keep track as to how God is working in my life by the validation I get from HIM and the way He answers my prayers. I try to have a heaven perspective. Planning not just for this temporary life but for my forever life.

In return, God has blessed my life abundantly. I have always had work, I have always had money in my wallet, I have the respect of my family and friends. I have worked hard and enjoyed living in my own home. I have been on some fantastic holidays. I have had the pleasure of having our children wanting to join us as well, and we have had some great family holidays. Recently my mother turned 80 years of age and three generations all went away celebrating her special day together.

LIFE IS GOOD WHEN YOU GIVE IT ALL TO GOD

Prayer

Dear Father God,

You know us better than anyone else, even ourselves, guide our paths and align them with Yours so that we may grow and learn to become the best versions of ourselves. Send your Holy Spirit to infill us afresh with the gifts of love, patience, kindness and right judgement so as to fulfill your will for us and to make us worthy of heaven. AMEN

RELIGION AND MY LIFE SERIES_Why I go to church

Image result for james stenson going to church

I have heard from family and friends that mass can be boring. That we can pray alone. I can understand why people would think this,  but as I remember……….. going to meetings at work was boring, going to Professional Development sessions was boring, going back to study at university was boring, my graduation was boring, waiting to see my doctor or specialist for 1 hour sometimes 2 hours was boring.  I get it! But think of the purpose and the greater good.

Sometimes we do things because we have to, sometimes we do things because we need help in some area, sometimes we do things because it will add something to our lives. I would like to think that all the above reasons can add to our lives. So I go to church because of what it can add to my spiritual growth and the chain reaction it may effect in my life .

Without church then  it just becomes a Jesus thing, not that there is anything wrong with that, however, Jesus lived a life that encompassed the hebrew tradition of His forefathers and He refers to our Old Testament fathers in the New Testament.

Reading the bible can be difficult and confusing, I don’t always understand the context, the message nor the Hebrew traditions. Going to church helps unpack all of these and then I go to a bible study group to fellowship and chat with friends for greater understanding.

The truth matters and it should matter to all . If I can do something to help myself then why wouldn’t I do it? When I think about how so many people waste their time in gambling venues, on their phone, watching soap operas and going to beauty therapists, I ask, where is the balance?

At Holy Thursday, Jesus instituted the eucharist and the mass, He said…..“Do this in memory of me.” – Jesus (Luke: 22:19). Jesus didn’t say if you have the time, or whenever…. He commanded it.. DO THIS! He said.

Image result for luke 22: 19

For Jesus to say this, He must have known how important it is, how life saving it can be.

If you really thought about who you are, who God is, and how much thanks you owe Him, you would want to go to Mass. The Mass would become the source and center of your spiritual life.” – James Stenson

The great Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, when conducting a retreat for teenagers, once gave a talk on the meaning of the Mass. He said, “If you don’t get anything out of Mass, it’s because you don’t bring the right expectations to it.” The Mass is not entertainment, he said. It is worship of the God who made us and saves us. It is an opportunity to praise God and thank Him for all that He has done for us.

If we have a correct understanding of Mass, Bishop Sheen said, it will become more meaningful for us. We will want to go to Mass. We will understand why the Mass is God’s precious gift to us, and we wouldn’t think of refusing that gift.             (Courtesy of CERC)

When God is with us in prayer, God’s favour and healing is bestowed upon us, and when it’s done in multitudes, it has a magnifying effect.

If we give God a chance, He will help us experience the tremendous benefits of the Mass and the Eucharist. James Stenson writes: Be patient. Bring an attitude of prayer and thanksgiving to Mass, and you will reap great spiritual riches: consolation, confidence, peace, deep happiness, and spiritual strength for the challenges of life.

I do not want to lose on my salvation. Do you?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Instill in us a hunger for You, a spirit of seeking the absolute truth and to keep holy the Sabbath Day all for the glory of heaven. AMEN

THERE IS NO DEATH WHEN WE PUT OUR TRUST IN HIM

Image result for 50 days of easter

Because Easter is the most important feast in the Christian calendar, even more important than Christmas, the Easter season continues on for 50 days, through the Ascension of Our Lord to Pentecost Sunday, seven full weeks after Easter Sunday! 50 days to contemplate the joy that Jesus brought,  the hope for a better life with Him. The hope that we are not on our own to muddle through this mess we’ve got ourselves in.

When we surrender to the grace of God, He will help us. This doesn’t mean that pain will end, that problems won’t come, that death won’t touch us. But THAT EVERYTHING ON THIS EARTH WILL PASS. Everything that GOD HAS PROMISED WILL COME TO US. EVERYTHING with God’s stamp on it will be easier to endure, easier to cope with, easier to resolve.

Isn’t that why God gave us His Son Jesus, to lead us all to the Heavenly Father???? That’s where God wants us, that’s where we belong with our Father in heaven.

So, I say, shake off the blues, sorrow, hopelessness and believe in the one who is greater than this world and everyone or everything in it.

I can’t understand why many don’t aspire to this? It’s not that the alternative is better, it might leave you with some instant gratification but then comes the aftermath- the self pity, regret, hurt and destruction that the sin first enticed you with.

As St. John Chrysostom reminds us .. “Christ has destroyed death, and now is the feast of faith.”

At this time of the year I like to listen to Handel’s Messiah_ “If God be for us”

Oppression of what is truth and moral

Black Brunch' Protesters Strike Again — but Restaurant Staff ...

In this day and age, whenever one makes a moral argument about something the tag of discrimination goes up. People who have right wing, conservative politics and bring up bible truths and laws instituted by Jesus Christ, get called old fashioned, xenophobic, misogynistic, racist and uncaring. The leftist argument is that Jesus cared for all people, that He didn’t discriminate. But Jesus also made us aware of SIN. His laws are found in the New Testament, they serve as a guide to living. Isn’t that the reason Father-God sent him to us?

In the New Testament, Jesus gives us laws about family, marriage, birth and death, abortion, gender, etc…. Jesus was not concerned with political correctness, He was concerned with justice and fairness, law and order avoiding SIN for salvation.  Upholders of moral, conservative, right wing views are now the recipients of censorship and oppression of free speech rights. Is this what progress looks like? Well, I say it’s going backwards.

Milo Yiannopoulos a right wing, gay, catholic, activist, highlights this and although I don’t agree with everything he says, makes some very good points here. He is a perfect example of one who is misreported, discriminated upon by losing his job, and told that he is inciting violence for expressing his truth as he sees it. Never mind that he has sold out shows wherever he goes, especially in Australia and that he speaks what most are too afraid to say. Check it out below

Germaine Greer and the interview she gave to a BBC reporter who is very provocative and trying to trip her up, is appalling.  This shows exactly the oppression and discrimination we are facing today. Then Germaine Greer does not receive her honorary doctorate because of her transgender views even though she gives scientific factual arguments to support them. What a lot of rubbish!!!!!!!

This is exactly what Jesus had to endure, because He was different, because He was testing the Pharisees and their laws, He was rejected. Jesus came to give them a new way to live, a way to salvation which is through Him. The Pharisees couldn’t fathom a different way of living so they hated and persecuted Jesus. Well, nothing has changed, we still have Pharisees amongst us. Christians are being persecuted today for their beliefs, it might be covert in the western world but it’s happening around us.

I can’t understand why I can’t practise my religion without having to justify it. Christianity is what has formed many countries of the world and it’s on the rise in China and South Korea. Some of THE TOP CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS ARE CHRISTIANS eg…

  1. World Vision
  2. Caritas
  3. Salvation Army
  4. St. Vincent De Paul
  5. Compassion Australia

I can’t understand why conservative, right wing views have to be justified when much of what is spoken of are set as laws which have held us in good stead for centuries. If you look at societies today, can we believe that we have progressed when we have more violence, more censorship, more oppression of christians, more slavery, more poverty, more suicide especially amongst men, than ever before????????????????

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS (VIA CRUCIS) THE EVENTS OF GOOD FRIDAY

After having just come back from a church prayer service on last Friday night to pray the stations of the cross or “Via Crucis,” for my lenten preparations, I couldn’t help but think of what Jesus went through and what He must be feeling right now.

People who have forgotten about Jesus and how He ransomed his life for ours,  those who don’t pray, attend prayer services or go to Mass and blatantly say that it’s old fashioned and that it’s not done anymore. Since when did Jesus become old fashioned?  When do we stop giving Jesus the praises He so deserves?

I remember as a child going to church during Lent for “The Stations of the Cross” and the church was full, now  a fraction attend. I remember when everybody I knew was fasting, savouring, being more attentive to another’s needs, move giving of their time etc. and then waiting for the day of celebrating in the joy of Easter Sunday with friends and family. It was the best!!!!!!! Now we don’t wait for anything, we live in a click and go society where everything is almost instant.

I have sometimes felt that when things get a little hard friends often don’t hang around because they don’t know what to say, feel awkward, it’s too hard or they’re embarrassed about your situation. It’s at these times when we need our friends the most, that they walk away. That’s exactly what happened to Jesus during that week of death at Easter-betrayal, rejection, disapproval and denial.

Image result for John 3:16

Over 2000 years have passed since Jesus walked this earth and we haven’t learnt from past mistakes. It is very apparent that the world is becoming more and more secular? There is a growing indifference to the sacrifices Jesus made for our salvation? Lack of those basic values of worship, prayer, courtesy, respect, savouring, waiting for your turn, allowing others to go before you etc, those basic values that have all come from gospel values and have held us in good stead for a long time, but all of a sudden, they have become old fashioned and not cool.

Let’s just stop and think for a minute. When Jesus challenged the thinking of the Pharisees,  he became an enemy of Caesar.  Caiaphas the high priest couldn’t wait to get rid of Jesus. Life was supposed to continue as it always had with no deviations or challenges, God’s rules and to another way of life was not attractive or feasible to them,  with Jesus crucified, dead and buried, they would just cancel Him out altogether. But isn’t that what we do to Jesus all over again???

(Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’(Mat. 25: 45)

Treating others with contempt because they’re different, accusing them as guilty before proven innocent, trialling people by media, embarrassing and belittling people on national TV.  Sacking them because they have a point of view that is contrary to the leadership team. People’s private lives are aired on national TV for others’ amusement, people who have to fess up for their private indiscretions to make peace with the public in order to protect the club, place of work etc…. and then, all the bullying and sly remarks that follow, that’s pretty horrid stuff I would think! My point been, that we have become so indifferent to other people’s feelings and needs that we are willing to step over them and treat them disrespectfully at all cost. But isn’t that what happened to Jesus???????????????????????? Make no mistake, what we do unto others we do unto God.

Jesus was rejected, thrown out of the city, disowned and crucified precisely so that the powers of Caesar would increase while the power of Jesus would decrease.

On the cross, we see how hateful to the world and how thoroughly rejected is the teaching and the person of Christ. Even in the inscriptions on the cross INRI mock Jesus, insinuating that He is the King of the Jews ( and not much of a king at that because He couldn’t even save Himself).

Most of us would like to think that we can trust our political parties and institutions to look after our interest and serve all our needs just fine, as long as we don’t make too many waves or hope for too much, all will work out in the end. Really?????????? What’s changed since Jesus’ mockery, his degrading execution, since his painful death , which He didn’t even have to endure by the way.

Even the good thief crucified beside Jesus took hope from the good that he saw from Jesus and asked in the share in whatever Jesus had to give. “Jesus remember me,” the good thief prayed and that’s exactly what we pray during the Good Friday liturgy. Jesus the”Good Shepherd” that He is having found the one sheep that was lost, put him on his shoulders rejoicing and carried him home.

But all was not lost! Jesus defied Caesar, Caiaphas and all the authorities. Even the centurion converted after having witnessed Jesus’ sincerity.

NEW LIFE THROUGH DEATH, THAT’S GOD’S PROMISE. CAN ANYONE BEAT THAT?

To answer the title question, Jesus is always there for us in the good, bad, hard and stressful times of our lives.  We need do nothing to deserve the love of God and Jesus, just faith.

I leave you with these thoughts and you can take what you wish from them.                +Is Jesus still relevant today?                                                                                        +Should we be more concerned with what we want or with what we ought to do?+Should we plan for our salvation?                                                                                   +Are the things we want a right?

Prayer / Reflection

 The Greatest Man in History,

Jesus, had no servants,

Yet they called Him, ‘Master’.

He had no degree,

Yet they called Him, ‘Teacher’.

He had no medicines,

Yet they called Him, ‘Healer’.

He had no army,

Yet kings feared Him.

He won no military battles,

Yet He conquered the world.

He committed no crime,

Yet they crucified Him.

He was buried in a tomb,

Yet He lives today.

COME LORD JESUS!
