I WRITE WITH A HEAVY HEART UPON HEARING ABOUT THE TRAGEDY IN LAS VEGAS AND THE LOCAL NEWS TODAY.
IT’S NOT GOING TO GO AWAY! YES! IT’S ENOUGH TO MAKE ONE WANT TO GO INTO HIDING. BUT REALLY! IS THAT GOING TO SOLVE ANYTHING? I THINK NOT!!!!!
Despair is something I see often about all sorts of things related to pain, family, children, work, health, death, money, etc. etc…..because the view is that there is nothing I can do so I might as well give up. I have never seen anything getting better because of giving up. We cannot dwell on the past, we can pray about it, we can learn from it and change the future and move forward.
What we all need is HOPE. Hope makes us think of a better way, a better future, hope makes people want to change, make the world a better place.
Hope is not a virtue we aspire too much these days. My philosophy in life is………………………………….. fake it till you make it.
How do I do that?
I pray for help, ask for help, go somewhere else for help, read more, speak to someone who knows more than me about the problem. Try another way. One cannot expect things to change without one doing something about it. God helps those who help themselves.
Hope in a christian context, isn’t just about feeling good and positive, it’s hope in God, trusting in His grace rather than in ourselves.
We can sin against the virtue of Hope through despair. Despair focuses on the problem, instead of God’s grace and power. Despair imagines that God can’t save us, that He doesn’t want to save us. NOT SO!!!! If we deliberately give in to despair, we are disrespecting God, we can fall upon more grief and add to our problems.
Unfortunately, society has become more secular, hedonistic and egotistical. Hence our problems have increased. Family values have been eroded through the gradual turning away from God and the gospel values of Jesus Christ, by looking inward rather than outward. Society-turning on itself rather than God. Our values have also been eroded by the media, commercialism and consumerism, by government policies and through sin.
Making raising a family, more and more difficult and challenging. All you have to do is look at how the family unit is breaking down and the more that happens the more problems arise. Why?????? Because the family is the beginning, the place where faith in God is learnt, where love is experienced, where children feel they belong, where values are taught, where problems are shared and solved. If this is not present, where do people turn to? They turn to money, drugs, sex, crime etc.
We need to turn outwards, we need to turn to God. If we keep our eyes firmly fixed on God and His love, then we can’t go wrong.

Jesus unfolded Christian hope in the beatitudes, proclaiming that those who suffer trials on earth are blessed in heaven. This hope “does not disappoint” (Rom 5:5) because Jesus has gone ahead “as a forerunner on our behalf” (Heb 6:19-20). Therefore, we can hope to gain heaven and to persevere “to the end” (Mt 10:22). The Church prays for “all men to be saved” (1 Tim 2:4) and she awaits union with Christ, the Bridegroom. “Hope, O my soul, hope. Watch carefully. Dream that the more you struggle, the more you will rejoice one day with your Beloved” (St. Teresa of Avila).
